Healthcare Identifier Service
The Healthcare Identifier Service (HI Service) issues unique IDs to healthcare providers and individuals who seek healthcare.
The Healthcare Identifier Service issues identifiers for individuals and healthcare providers in Australia:
- Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI)
- Allocated to all individuals who are enrolled in Medicare, issued with a DVA
treatment card, or seeking healthcare in Australia. IHIs do not replace Medicare or
DVA numbers and do not affect the way medical benefits are claimed.
In Clinical, a patient's IHI is recorded in their demographics. It can be retrieved automatically or entered manually.
- Healthcare Provider Identifier - Individual (HPI-I)
- Allocated to healthcare providers involved in providing patient care. Each
registered practitioner must have an HPI-I number.
In Clinical, a practitioner's HPI-I is recorded in their practitioner details.
- Healthcare Provider Identifier- Organisation (HPI-O)
- Allocated to organisations that deliver healthcare, such as hospitals and medical
practices. Each registered practice must have an HPI-O number.
In Clinical, an organisation's HPI-O is recorded in their practice details.
