Installing Clinical/Pracsoft with the Installation Wizard

The Installation Wizard guides you through the installation of Clinical/Pracsoft.

Before you begin

  • Prepare for the installation as described in the New Installation Checklist.
  • If an error message is displayed during installation, contact MedicalDirector Customer Support for assistance.
  • Install the software on the server computer first, then install the software on the workstation and mobile computers where you want to run Clinical and/or Pracsoft.

About this task

The steps for installing all Clinical/Pracsoft roles are similar. The main difference is that, if you are installing a server, the database is also installed. Differences are noted in the instructions.
Important:
  • Installations can take an hour or more for each computer. To minimise disruption to the practice, installations should be done outside business hours. It is usually not possible to complete an installation during a practice's lunch break.
  • Do not cancel the installation before it is complete. If you do so, Clinical / Pracsoft will probably be unusable. Contact Customer Support for assistance.
  • If you are reinstalling Clinical / Pracsoft as a customised installation, you will need to know the previous installed locations, as noted in Determining the Installed Location.
  • If there are multiple ManageEzy folders on any attached filesystem, the installation uses the most recent ManageEzy folder. This overrides any selections in Advanced Options.

Procedure

To install Clinical/Pracsoft:
  1. Go to the MedicalDirector website and to the Upgrades page.
  2. In the Ready to Upgrade section, click I'm installing a new system.
  3. Download the ISO for the latest version of Clinical.
  4. Use archiving software such as 7-Zip to extract the contents of the ISO into a new empty folder.
  5. If you are installing a terminal server:
    1. Advise all users not to log in to the server until the installation is complete.
    2. In the Session Manager, remove any active or disconnected sessions.
    3. Temporarily block all user access.
  6. Mount the installation ISO. To do this:
    • In File Explorer, select the disc image file. Click Mount.
    • In File Explorer, double-click the setup.exe file.
    • If you are installing a terminal server, ensure the server is in install mode. To do this, go to Add / Remove Program and start the MedicalDirector Installer.
  7. If the installation times out:
    1. In the Windows Control Panel, click Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off.
    2. Set .NET Framework 3.5.
    3. Follow the prompts to install the .NET Framework 3.5 files.
    4. Click Close.
  8. In the Installation Wizard Welcome window, click Next.
  9. The Installation Wizard window displays a list of important installation tasks that protect your practice's data and allow the installation to proceed. Complete the tasks.
  10. Set I have read and understood these recommendations and wish to continue.
  11. Click Next.
  12. The Installation Wizard lists any third-party software that must be installed before you install Clinical / Pracsoft. Click Next. The software is installed. This can take some time, depending on the number of applications to be installed and their requirements. You might need to restart the computer.
    Tip:
If you are installing a server and it restarted, and then the MedicalDirector Installer restarted, click Cancel. To ensure the server is in install mode, start the MedicalDirector Installer through Add / Remove Programs.

A message is displayed that states whether the required third-party software was installed successfully. If any were unsuccessful, contact your Systems Support for assistance.

  13. In the Installation Wizard window, select the role the computer will have in your practice:
    • Server. The server must be installed first. This option requires an active network connection.
    • Workstation. Workstations can be installed after the server installation is complete. This option requires an active network connection.
    • Standalone. Server and workstation roles are installed at the same time on standalone computers.
    • Mobile Mobiles can be installed after the server installation is complete. This option requires an active network connection.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Select an instance of SQL on which to install the patient database. If you intend to use full SQL, it must be installed and configured before proceeding with this step.
    • If you selected Server or Standalone, you can choose to either install a new MedicalDirector server, or use one of the SQL Servers you already have installed. If you installed full SQL, then HCNSQL07 and ESP will be listed and HCNSQL07 will be selected.
    • If you selected Workstation or Mobile, it is assumed you will connect to an existing SQL instance on your server computer.
  16. Click Next.
  17. Review the installation summary.
  18. Click Begin. Messages are displayed so you can monitor the progress of the installation. No action is required.
  19. When the installation is complete, the Installation Wizard displays a summary of the installation and any errors that occurred. Click Finish.
